The Lifespan of LED Panel Lights Depends on Dissipating the Heat Generated by Leds

How to calculate the junction temperature of LED panel lights?


Junction temperature seems like a temperature measurement question, but the junction temperature to be measured is inside the LED, and we cannot use a thermometer or thermocouple to measure its temperature. Of course, its outer shell temperature can still be measured using a thermocouple, and then based on the given thermal resistance Rjc (junction to case), we can calculate its junction temperature. However, after installing the heat sink, the question becomes more complicated.


Now let's take an LED panel light as an example to explain how to calculate the junction temperature of LED lights. The LED needs to be installed in the heat sink, and a constant current driver must be used as the power source. At the same time, the two wires connected to the LED should be drawn out. Connect the voltmeter to the output terminal (the positive and negative poles of the LED), then turn on the power, and read the voltmeter when the LED has not yet heated up, which is equal to the value of V1. Then wait for at least one hour until it reaches thermal equilibrium and measure the voltage at both ends of the LED, which is equal to V2. The difference between these two values is obtained, and then divided by 4mV to get the junction temperature. The junction temperature obtained by this method is more accurate than calculating the junction temperature by measuring the temperature of the heat sink using a thermocouple.


How to reduce the junction temperature and extend the lifespan of panel lights?


The key to extending the lifespan of LED panel lights is to lower their junction temperature, and the key to lowering the junction temperature is to have a good heat sink. If we can measure the junction temperature that any heat sink can reach, not only can we compare the heat dissipation effects of various heat sinks, but we can also understand the lifespan of LED lights after using a specific heat sink.
